Medicine- Not Just About Medics

13th December 2017

Students at the academy had the opportunity to visit the University of Leeds as part of a STEM day 'Medicine- not just about Medics'.  They had the opportunity to explore how teams of scientists, engineers and mathematicians work alongside medical doctors, helping them understand the spread of disease, discover better treatments and cures and develop technology to aid more accurate diagnosis.

Students attended 3 sessions. Session 1 was on current research into the use of bubbles to deliver drugs to targeted areas in the body. The second session was on the creation of paracetamol and the chemistry behind it. In the final session the students used a process called ‘gel electrophoresis’ to diagnose cancer from DNA.

A fantastic day where students got involved in every session!
